The quality of leadership within the group is a key component of Smiths’ growth strategy. After many years of working in a stable operational market, the business identified the need to cultivate its leadership talent to meet the future and changing needs of the organisation. An internal review highlighted specific development needs in the area of Emotional Intelligence, in particular greater agility in adapting to and embracing innovation and change.
We partnered with Smiths News to understand their needs and to design interventions in support of this. From this we delivered individual coaching programmes and group interventions for the senior leadership talent group to enable each member to progress with their personal and leadership development. We have been engaged further to deliver other developmental interventions in support of business objectives, including: a team event for an executive team within the group; a bespoke Emotional Intelligence programme for mid-level leaders; and support to a team responding to change and challenge. More recently, we have supported Smiths News in assessing and identifying potential within the business.
Our long-standing relationship has enabled us to gain a thorough understanding of the Smiths News organisational culture which ensures we work in an aligned way – importantly supporting people to apply their learning to their everyday working lives at Smiths. The impact of our work has been wide-ranging, with consistently positive feedback from people we have worked with and the sponsoring talent management community. The greatest measure of this success is that people are more open to learning and are taking their development in their own hands; many participants have developed within their role or taken on bigger roles and are asking for more input from PSI.
